Campaign Kickoff – Friday, April 1 with our final kick-off planned for Saturday, April 30, 2022.
The Winning Team Will Win
The team that raises the most will be invited to participate in a “Bean to Bar Chocolate Experience,” hosted by a Level II Certified Chocolate Taster through the International Institute of Chocolate and Cacao Tasting (UK). Mary Luz Mejia curates Canadian bean-to-bar guided chocolate tastings for clients and engages chocolate lovers in exploring the nuances of fine chocolate from production, and how to use the senses to fully savour fine chocolate. There is literally a world of difference between well-made chocolate and commercial candy bars. And the best part is, you get to travel through your tastebuds via the equatorial countries that grow cacao that's as distinct and varied as coffee or wine.
Each person on the winning team will receive a carefully curated selection of chocolates to thoroughly enjoy the experience and the presentation will be held online.
Supporting Information, you will need to help you with your fundraising pitch
The $10,000 raised in this Peer-to-Peer Campaign, along with our other annual donations will go to support the following:
- Purchasing a camera (Canon G1Xii) for each of our students (cost is between $350 - $450 per camera)
- Food for the students during our 3-day training
- Transportation for the students from Kampala to our training exercise with a Ugandan-based NGO called Concern for the Girl Child. This exercise helps them build a portfolio and gives them field experience, which happens after the initial 3-day workshop.
- Year-long access to our training portal and funds to pay for the hosting of the platform.
- Expansion of our video training portal – we are always adding video tutorials to the training, which includes both photography and business skills
- Business skills training – hiring of experts and consultants to help our girls develop a resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile
- Conduct an in-person workshop in South Africa
About Cameras for Girls Cameras for Girls
The project was established in 2018, with our focus on training photography students in Uganda. Having personally come from Uganda in 1972 as a refugee to Canada and knowing firsthand how few opportunities there are for women, ignited my passion to make a significant difference.
Then, the stars aligned and in September 2021 Cameras for Girls became an official Canadian Registered Charity with the mission of empowering females across Africa, using photography as our medium. To date, I am delighted to report that we have successfully taught photography skills to thirty-two young women in Uganda during in-person workshops and ten additional young women in South Africa via zoom in conjunction with our partner agency, Khwela Womxn (add web link).
Since this initial training and working within our constrained budget, we have been able to assist 50% of our students in Uganda to attain full-time work in the journalism industry, knowing this the important work we do cannot stop here. Just this week we heard back from two more students who are so grateful that the photography training we provided to them has resulted in full-time work. This is cause for celebration!
Value Proposition – You will…
- Meet like-minded people
- Be invited to meet the students we support in both Uganda and South Africa via zoom
- Receive a monthly newsletter and donor impact reports.
On behalf of the female students, the Board of Directors and myself, thank you for reaching out to your personal network and championing the “Change Your Lens, Change Her Story” Campaign!
